Savings and match programs, also known as Individual Development Accounts (IDAs), help low- and moderate-income individuals and families save for assets like a home, small business, or education. These programs encourage regular saving by matching contributions and providing financial education on budgeting, banking, and saving. Participants typically attend classes, receive counseling, and commit to a savings plan that lasts one to five years. Once they reach their savings goal and receive approval from the program sponsor, funds can be used for their chosen asset. By helping individuals build assets, IDAs provide financial security beyond daily expenses, making it easier to meet household needs during financial hardships. Participants may save for a single large goal, such as a home, or smaller, related goals like tuition and textbooks.
